About Doina Ruști

DOINA RUȘTI is one of the most widely read writers in Romania. Author of award winning novels such as The Ghost in the Mill (2008), Lizoanca (2013), The Phanariot Manuscript (2015), The Book of Perilous Dishes (2017), and Homeric (2019), she impresses with her narra-tive force, and the courage to address a variety of themes ranging from pedophilia and dys-functional families to sorcery and eighteen-century Bucharest customs and superstitions.

About Ileana Marin

ILEANA MARIN teaches interdisciplinary courses at the University of Washington, Seattle, and at the Center of Excellence in Image Studies in Bucharest. She has published books on tragic myths, Pre-Raphaelite artists, and Victorian aesthetics of erasure. Ileana Marin has participated in international conferences with papers on the de-humanizing power of art and the artistic legacy of communism as well as on the materiality of literary, pictorial, and graphic texts. After presenting the paper “Romanian Literature in Post-1989 English Translation” at the 2020 MLA conference, she has taken on translating Romanian female writers who are underrepresented in English. Marin is co-founder, and currently the Board Chair, of the Seattle non-profit American Romanian Cultural Society.
